About the Farm and How It Started
We started farming 15 years ago. It was a continuation of the family tradition, inherited from my relatives who were involved in agriculture their entire lives.
Traditional Practices Still in Use
There haven’t been major changes in agricultural production – we continue to use traditional practices passed down from my parents. However, the tools have evolved and become more industrialized.
Changes in Working Methods Over the Years
The only change in the last 10–20 years is the use of black plastic sheeting, which helps retain moisture and keep the soil free from weeds. This technique helps reduce water use but has negative effects, such as lack of recycling options.
Meanwhile, 40–50 years ago, many changes took place. The land was worked with artisanal tools made by local craftsmen, such as:
- “Parmen” (a V-shaped wooden plow) that turned the soil to both sides,
- Metal plows that turned soil to one side, pulled by two animals called “qe” (plural) or “ka” (singular) — castrated male oxen, one trained to lead the other,
- After 2–3 days, the soil was broken up using a tool called “maj” to break it into smaller pieces, then processed with “valak” and treated with “trina” attached to the oxen.
All those artisanal tools are exhibited at the Ethno-museum Dragine.
Water for irrigation was drawn from the Buna River for lands near the river using buckets; other lands used wells.
For production of melons, beans, etc., organic fertilizer from the previous summer (dried and decomposed during winter) was added.
Motivation to Keep Traditional Practices Alive
The will and desire to produce organic and local products. The trust that buyers have in me inspires me greatly to produce high-quality agricultural products.
Contribution to Preservation of Nature and Biodiversity
Using pesticide-free and organic care methods helps keep the soil healthy.
Main Challenges in Preserving Traditional Practices
The biggest challenges are preserving dairy and agricultural products. We need special refrigerators and shade nets.
Working with agricultural products is demanding due to the need for constant care, daily watering, and sun protection.
Also, large companies compete in the market with lower prices for non-organic products, creating insecurity among local traders.
Interest from Visitors and Community Involvement
Yes, through tourism offers, tourists can visit the farm and learn about the production process. Abroad, the term “slow food” is very current and gaining the attention it deserves.
The community, especially children, can be involved through school-based educational activities.
History and Heritage
These practices have been passed down through generations, adapting to different time periods, but today they face threats due to the lack of interest from young people.
Economic Sustainability
To some extent, as the market is unstable.
Necessary Support to Improve and Expand Practices
Workforce would be very much needed, as well as any investment that could increase sustainability, raise awareness about organic methods, and improve financial conditions.
Reflections on the Work
The biggest benefit from this work is the security of knowing that the food we consume is organic and healthy. The fertile land by the Buna River is a treasure that is worth learning how to use in the best possible way.
Future Vision for These Practices
It’s necessary to educate and raise awareness among young people about how valuable it is to grow and cultivate pesticide-free agricultural products.
I see that the way of life is changing rapidly, and the demand for material things is becoming increasingly dominant, taking attention away from the things that truly matter.
Advice to Those Wanting to Learn or Follow These Practices
To not give up and to work as if for themselves, with heart and dedication. One day it will be appreciated.
