Lirije Farm – Tradition Rooted in the Land
At the heart of Ulqini’s countryside lies Lirije Farm, a place where tradition and sustainability meet. For Lirije Kallaba, agriculture is more than a livelihood — it’s a continuation of family heritage, carried forward with dedication and care.
“These practices have been inherited from generation to generation,” she explains. “It would have been painful not to value the resources we already had, so we decided to preserve and develop them with will and dedication.”
The farm is alive with diversity: dairy from seven cows — milk, yogurt, clotted cream, and cheese — all processed using traditional methods; organic pomegranate juice; watermelons and seasonal vegetables; figs, citrus fruits, and olives from more than 400 olive trees and 300 pomegranate trees. Every product reflects both quality and authenticity. “Cheese, yogurt, clotted cream, and all dairy products are organic. Olives are harvested traditionally, and the oil is produced with a stone mill.”
While rooted in tradition, the farm has embraced some modern methods to keep pace with growing demands. “Yes, some processes have been modernized. Now the milking of cattle is done with machines, as well as hay collection. This helps us be more efficient without losing quality.”
Sustainability is at the core of everything they do. Instead of relying on chemicals, Lirije Farm uses organic manure, rainwater, and even collected cattle urine for irrigation — creating a closed cycle that nourishes the soil and preserves its natural balance.
“Our practices help preserve nature by avoiding chemicals… grazing supports the natural regeneration of pastures.”
Yet, the challenges are real.
“The biggest challenge is the lack of interest from young people and society’s undervaluing of these practices. We also lack human resources and sufficient financial support from institutions.”
Rising prices and limited institutional backing make the future uncertain, but Lirije remains committed. “This is work that requires a lot of dedication, but it is something to be proud of. It is a continuation of our ancestors’ efforts and a healthy way of living that is worth preserving.”
Visitors who come to Ulqin often stop by the farm, experiencing firsthand the traditions that give meaning to every product. It’s not just about food — it’s about connection, heritage, and respect for the land.
Looking ahead, Lirije hopes for more recognition and support, both for her farm and for the community’s agricultural traditions.
“Anyone who chooses to follow these practices must be aware that this is work that requires dedication and love for the land and tradition.”
