Reborn by Adventures: Nature, Heritage, and Community in Ulqin

When you meet Artan, the founder of Reborn by Adventures, it quickly becomes clear that his work is not just about tourism, it’s about love. Love for the natural, cultural, and historical heritage of Ulcinj, and love for the community that calls this region home.

“The idea came from our love for the natural, cultural, and historical heritage of Ulqin,” Artan explains.

“Fascinated by the potential of this region, we decided to share the joys and beauties we experience daily through activities like walking, cycling, and SUP boarding. These activities inspire us to expand the tourist offer beyond the short summer season.”

Ulqin, with its breathtaking landscapes and centuries-old traditions, is often viewed only through the lens of summer tourism. For Artan, however, the region’s beauty extends far beyond the high season. Through Reborn by Adventures, he offers activities that connect visitors with nature throughout the year, ensuring that tourism supports—not harms—the local environment and culture.

For Artan, sustainable tourism is inseparable from nature and  culture preservation.

“We aim to showcase all traditional practices of our region during our activities and support those who passionately preserve Ulqin’s tangible and intangible heritage,” he says.

By partnering with local families, producers, and craftsmen, Reborn by Adventures ensures that every activity tells a story—not just of nature, but also of people.

Over the years, Artan and his team have been active in seminars and workshops, continuously learning how tourism can contribute to conservation.

“We have gained knowledge through various seminars and activities that raise awareness about Ulqin’s natural potential and how tourism can contribute to preserving this potential with a sustainable and community-supportive offer,” he notes.

Despite successes, challenges remain. Seasonal tourism, environmental issues, and a lack of institutional support are pressing obstacles.

“Dealing with pollution, illegal dumping, and the lack of proper waste management systems poses significant hurdles,” Artan explains.

“We also struggle with limited infrastructure, such as proper biking trails, SUP launch sites, and eco-tourism facilities.”

Still, these challenges fuel his determination. Reborn by Adventures proves that with creativity, collaboration, and a clear vision, sustainable tourism can thrive even in difficult conditions.

One of the project’s greatest strengths lies in its collaboration with the local community.

“By setting a good and trustworthy example, we foster healthy communication with the community,” Artan says.

“Their products or activities contribute to making our offer authentic and the representation of the region more genuine. Mutual goodwill and desire to contribute result in successful cooperation.”

This cooperation not only enriches the visitor experience but also ensures that tourism directly benefits local families.

Every walking tour, bike ride, and paddleboard trip is designed to connect people with Ulqin’s landscapes. The hope is simple yet powerful: once visitors and locals fall in love with the place, they will want to protect it.

“Our tourist offer prioritizes sustainability and raises awareness of natural and cultural wealth,” says Artan. “By understanding the region’s beauty and heritage, there is a natural desire to preserve it for future generations.”

Artan believes that with the right support, sustainable and nature & community-based tourism can become both profitable and long-lasting.

“Yes, with willpower and collaboration, our practices can ensure income and sustainability,” he says. “Support from local institutions and a solid management plan are essential for the development and expansion of our activities.”

And when asked what advice he would give to others starting this journey, his answer reflects his own path: “Start with passion and purpose, learn continuously, connect with the community, think long-term and sustainable, innovate while respecting tradition. Start small but stay consistent. Collaborate and network. Share your knowledge and practices with visitors, locals, and younger generations. Inspire them to care for nature and contribute to its preservation.”

At its heart, Reborn by Adventures is more than a business—it’s a movement. It’s about walking gently on the land, celebrating tradition, involving the community, and creating meaningful experiences that leave both visitors and locals with a deeper appreciation of Ulqin.

“We take pride in offering unique, nature-based activities like cycling, walking tours, and SUP boarding that highlight the region’s natural and cultural treasures,” Artan reflects. “What makes our work special is our commitment to sustainability. Through our activities, we aim to inspire visitors and locals to appreciate and protect Ulqin’s natural landscapes and biodiversity.”

With visionaries like Artan Lika leading the way, the future of sustainable tourism in Ulqin looks not only promising but truly transformative.
